Seoul City has launched a groundbreaking program that aims to speed up the detection of missing people through the use of CCTV technology and artificial intelligence (AI).

Jungnang-gu district was awarded a project budget of 200 million won (roughly $144,000 USD) as a result of being selected for the “Seoul City AI CCTV-Based High-Speed Search System for Missing People” contest on June 14th.

The AI CCTV-based high-speed search system is a unique approach that implements AI-enhanced CCTV technology to speedily locate and monitor the movements of missing individuals.

This system is especially committed to providing assistance to socially vulnerable groups, including infants, dementia patients, and individuals with developmental disabilities.

Authorities can rapidly identify and locate a missing person by inputting their photo and descriptive information into the system, thereby securing the critical golden time necessary for successful recovery.

Jungnang-gu, a district in Seoul, is the project's leader. The district's dedication to improving public safety is underscored by its proactive approach to procuring the project budget through a competitive selection process.

The district's mayor, Ryu Gyeong-gi, highlighted the district's commitment to establishing a secure environment for its residents.

He pointed out, “With the selection of this contest project, we expect to build an AI CCTV high-speed search system and make a significant contribution to preventing the disappearance of the socially vulnerable.”

The funds obtained through the contest will be used to commence the endeavor in July. Jungnang-gu intends to finalize the construction of the system by the latter half of the year.

The AI CCTV-based high-speed search system addresses a need for rapidly responding to missing persons, particularly those from vulnerable groups.

This capacity to promptly identify and monitor these individuals can substantially decrease the duration of their absence, thereby enhancing the likelihood of their safe return and reducing the associated hazards.

Jungnang-gu has been actively expanding its CCTV infrastructure to enhance overall safety, in addition to the AI-enhanced search capabilities.

The district currently maintains 4,512 multi-purpose CCTVs with the objective of facilitating rapid responses to disasters and offenses and preventing a variety of incidents.

It also replaced 292 outdated units and installed 258 new CCTVs in strategic locations, including alleys, playgrounds, and trekking trails, last year.

Additionally, AI-equipped crowd management cameras will also be installed in high-traffic areas of the region, such as Sagajeong Station and Sangbong Station, to mitigate safety hazards associated with congestion.

A protective safety net has also been established by the district by enhancing its intelligent screening control system to detect abnormal signs and intensify monitoring.

The AI CCTV-based high-speed search system is an important development in public safety technology for Seoul.

This cutting-edge technology is the intended application of AI, and it is recommended that other countries implement it as well.
