There have been numerous reports suggesting that the AVG Antivirus for mobile devices has been detecting an unusual application called Nephilim as a potential threat.
This detection has caused concern among Android users who rely on AVG as their main antivirus software, prompting speculation about the true nature of this Nephilim app.
Many users are concerned about the potential for the Nephilim app to track their activity and steal sensitive data from their mobile devices, due to the threat detection by AVG.
The app lacks any description or information about its functionality or purpose. Furthermore, it lacks a unique logo that is commonly seen in apps, instead opting for a default android icon that some users may find peculiar.
Other users have also mentioned that AVG flagged additional applications like Dual App and OsuLogin.
What we found
After conducting a thorough investigation, we have determined that the Nephilim app is not malware.
Based on information gathered from different communities, it appears that the application in question is a system app that comes preinstalled on Infinix phones.
Typically, users do not see the system app by default as it is hidden. It only becomes visible when flagged by antivirus software like AVG.
Uninstalling these apps is not a straightforward process, as users are only given the option to force stop them or temporarily disable them.
Based on our analysis, it appears that this is just another instance of a false positive detected by the AVG antivirus application.
Furthermore, it has come to our attention that some users have reported an interesting observation regarding certain antivirus software, such as Avast.
These users have noticed that Avast did not detect a particular threat during their scan. This is surprising considering that Avast and AVG have a shared threat library, implying that Avast should have identified the same threat that AVG did.
Risk of potential malware infection
Although the Nephilim app may not pose a significant risk to your mobile device, there is a possibility that banking trojans and malicious viruses could masquerade as system apps to evade detection by users and antivirus software.
For safety purposes, we suggest scanning your mobile device if you're encountering frequent crashes and overheating issues. You may want to try using a different antivirus software instead of AVG to perform an additional scan of your mobile phone's safety.
